Malik is a sensitive and clumsy child, taunted by two older boys who chase him by throwing firecrackers. The terrified child finds shelter in his home, a dark basement, where he takes some drawings depicting fairy-tale characters and starts to paint them. The world of fairy tales becomes real. Dressed as a prince, Malik helps Hansel and Gretel to get rid of the evil witch, he gives her cloak to the Little Match Girl to keep herself warm and her goldfish to the Little Prince, who misses her rose.
